Rutgers & NJAES Host
19th International Pepper Conference

This past September, Rutgers University and NJAES hosted the 19th International Pepper Conference in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Dr. Andy Wyenandt, Extension Specialist in Vegetable pathology and Dr. Wesley Kline, Cumberland County Agricultural Agent, hosted the 2-day event along with members of the NJAES Vegetable Working Group which featured a day of oral research presentations and a day-long field tour of vegetable production operations in South Jersey. Over 100 participants consisting of researchers, industry reps, extension educators and growers from 14 states and 14 countries attended this year’s meeting in New Jersey. This year, there were 27 oral presentations and 10 posters featuring all aspects of pepper production. Our keynote speaker, Dr. Paul Bosland, New Mexico State University and Director of the Chile Institute, gave an opening address on how to ‘Think Global, Breed Local: Specificity and Complexity of Phytophthora capsici’. On the second day, participants split up into two groups and visited the Sheppard, Laning, Flaim, Hensel, Wuillerman and Graiff farming operations where they got to see New Jersey vegetable production up close!
